Ford Amphitheater on Coney Island Boardwalk Opens for Business at 3052 West 21st Street

Last week, the open-air Ford Amphitheater on the Coney Island Boardwalk, at 3052 West 21st Street in southern Brooklyn, held its ribbon-cutting ceremony. The 5,000-seat venue debuted its first show, Impractical Jokers, on Friday. Live Nation is operating the amphitheater, according to Crain’s, and the location now serves as the new home of Seaside Summer Concert Series, which hosts free shows during the summer months. The three-story former Childs Restaurant Building, an individual landmark, was renovated and incorporated into the new amphitheater structure. The 90,164-square-foot building will also feature a restaurant on the ground floor and the rooftop, although it’s unclear when that will open. The rest of the property includes 40,000 square feet of public open space. The project is the work of iStar Financial, the nonprofit Coney Island USA, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). Gerner, Kronick + Valcarcel (a.k.a. GKV Architects) is the architect of record.



325 Calyer Street

Four-Story, 37,000-Square-Foot Manufacturing-Medical Building Filed at 325 Calyer Street, Greenpoint

Brooklyn-based property owner Anthony Wala has filed applications to expand the single-story manufacturing warehouse at 325 Calyer Street, in Greenpoint, into a four-story, 36,894-square-foot mixed-use commercial structure. Manufacturing space, making up 18,894 square feet, would be located on the ground, mezzanine, and second floors. Medical office space, totaling 18,000 square feet, would be located on the third and fourth floors. There would also be a 60-car garage on the ground floor. Jeffrey L. Kamen’s NoHo-based architectural firm is the architect of record. The 18,894-square-foot, block-thru lot is located eight blocks from the Greenpoint Avenue stop on the G train. The filings come on the heels of plans for a six-story, car repair-office building at 305 Calyer Street.


150-30 Liberty Avenue

Four-Story, 76,000-Square-Foot Self-Storage Facility Planned at 150-30 Liberty Avenue, Jamaica

Pennsylvania-based S&A Home Builder has filed applications for a four-story, 76,354-square-foot self-storage facility at 150-30 Liberty Avenue, in Jamaica. It will boast 55,526 square feet of commercial space for storage, three loading docks, and accessory office space. Frank L. Truglio’s Oyster Bay, N.Y.-based NF Architectural Designs is the architect of record. The development assemblage measures 31,132 square feet and consists of a strip of one- and two-story auto repair shops and some vacant lots. Demolition permits have not yet been filed. The site is located five blocks south of the Jamaica Center-Parsons/Architect Station on the E, J, and Z trains.


Grandstand Stadium

New 8,125-Seat Grandstand Stadium to Open for 2016 US Open

The United States Tennis Association’s 125,000-square-foot, 8,125-seat Grandstand Stadium is scheduled to debut for the 2016 US Open. The new stadium is a significant element of the $550 million overhaul of the 46-acre USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens. The seating capacity is 2,125 people more than before. The design comes from Detroit-based ROSSETTI, which is also behind the design of the renovated Arthur Ashe Stadium. As part of the overhaul, Ashe is getting a new, retractable roof. Other additions and upgrades to the include a retractable roof for Louis Armstrong Stadium and a two-tiered observation deck that overlooks the practice courts. Completion of the entire project is expected by 2018 and this year’s tournament runs from August 29 to September 11.
