Mecanoo To Lead New York Public Library Renovations At Bryant Park, Midtown

The New York Public Library Main Branch, located at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street, in Midtown, has selected the Netherlands-based architecture firm Mecanoo to design the building’s $300 million renovation, according to the New York Times. Beyer Blinder Belle will serve as the architect of record, and the 645,680 square-foot-building will receive new interiors. More space will also be opened to the public. Last year, the library abandoned planned renovations that would have been led by Norman Foster.


25 Avenue D

Seven-Story Expansion Of Treatment Center Tops Out At 25 Avenue D, East Village

The horizontal expansion of the seven-story building at 25 Avenue D, in the East Village, appears to be structurally complete, according to EV Grieve. Educational Alliance is building the expansion to their existing facility, which is used to treat adults with chemical dependancies. The new addition will be used to house patients, and according to filings, there will be a total of 37 units. The building has not yet received its façade, but a 2016 opening seems reasonable. WSP Cantor Seinuk is the engineer of record.


St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

World Trade Center’s Greek Orthodox Church Rising In Liberty Park, Financial District

Last year, ground was broken and new renderings were released for the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church planned at the also-under-construction Liberty Park, an elevated lot to the south of the World Trade Center, in the Financial District. The New York Times now reports the drum-shaped structure is rising and will be constructed with “white Pantelic marble, from the same vein in Greece that was quarried to construct the Parthenon.” Santiago Calatrava is designing, and completion of the sanctuary and park is expected in 2017.


105-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard

Four-Story, 50,000 Square-Foot Health Care Facility Planned At 105-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Seaside

Community Healthcare Associates, doing business as Cha Properties, has filed applications for a four-story, 49,228 square-foot community health care facility at 105-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, in the Seaside section of the Rockaways, right below the Beach 105th Street stop on the A and S trains. The building will incorporate the entire block, and the existing supermarket will have to be demolished. The Schedule A has offices occupying all four levels, and Englewood, NJ-based Ronald Schmidt is the architect of record.


2105 82nd Avenue

Four-Story, 16,500 Square-Foot Religious Facility Coming To 2105 82nd Avenue, Bensonhurst

Abdul Wahid has filed applications for a four-story, 16,563 square-foot religiously affiliated community building at 2105 82nd Street, in southern Bensonhurst, five blocks from the D train’s stop at 20th Avenue. The bottom floor will have the building’s lobby and area of worship, the second and third floors will be fitted for medical offices and classrooms, and the top floor will house the living quarters for three care takers. Long Island-based Willy Zambrano is the architect of record, and demolition permits were filed for two houses earlier this year.
