Located in the heart of Midtown between West 36th Street and West 37th Streets is a new hotel that has topped out at 525 Eighth Avenue. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architect, the 28-story building is being developed by Sam Chang of McSam Hotel Group. There will be 321 rooms covering a total of 96,000 square feet when complete.
Permits for construction of 74 Trinity Place were approved approximately one year ago, and already, the building has nearly topped-out, having reached the 20th of 26 eventual floors. The mixed-use tower has replaced a derelict but beautiful structure, and for that reason, the architect placed special attention to the design. Now, pedestrians in the Financial District are finally getting a glimpse of the bronzed skin. Façade installation, as designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, has finally commenced.
Downtown’s residential boom continues apace with the construction of 125 Greenwich Street, which has reached two-thirds of the way to its 912-foot-tall pinnacle on a corner overlooking the World Trade Center memorial. The tower will rise above most of its neighbors in the Financial District, but since it is right across from 1 World Trade Center, it will not make a sizable impact on the skyline. Architect Rafael Viñoly is also responsible for the Midtown supertall 432 Park Avenue.
There are few places better than Central Park to truly appreciate the scale of New York City. The cliff-like transition from Midtown to Olmsted’s masterpiece is part of what attracts people to the city, and it’s only getting more dramatic. Today YIMBY has a fresh rendering by Jose Hernandez, based on a photograph by Andrew Campbell Nelson from the Met’s Rooftop Garden, which reveals exactly how the skyline is expected to change through 2022 and currently appears in an exhibit at The Skyscraper Museum, in Lower Manhattan.
New renderings are out for the Brooklyn Navy Yard development, consisting of a $2.5 billion urban manufacturing center. Once complete, the entire project will create around 5.1 million square feet for middle-class manufacturing companies. The mission-based non-profit Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is responsible for the plans.
