Pedestrian-Friendly Fordham Plaza Opens To Public In West Bronx

The $34 million renovation and redesign of Fordham Plaza – bound by East 189th Street and East Fordham Road, and Park Avenue and Firefighters Boulevard in the West Bronx – has recently been completed, according to the Architect’s Newspaper. The plaza was designed by Grimshaw Architects and features a café, market canopies, public toilets, vegetation, and seating. It also serves 12 bus lines and is directly above the Fordham station on the Metro-North Railroad. The initiative behind the project was to reduce traffic accidents and to create a more pedestrian-friendly experience. The city’s Department of Design and Construction and Department of Transportation were behind the project.



515 Malcolm X Boulevard

Schomburg Center For Research In Black Culture At 515 Malcolm X Boulevard Getting Renovation, Harlem

The New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located at 515 Malcolm X Boulevard (between West 135th and 136th Streets) in Harlem, is getting a $22 million renovation, according to Curbed. Not only will parts of the building’s exterior be replaced, many of the interior spaces will be expanded and reconfigured, allowing for improved public access and assembly. Westerman Construction Company, the Department of Design and Construction, and Marble Fairbanks Architects are leading the renovation. Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.


Gateway Estates

Infrastructure Work Behind Schedule On Final Phase Of Gateway Estates Development, East New York

Gateway Estates, a multi-phased development consisting of affordable residential units and commercial space in southern East New York, is now preparing for its final phase of construction. The city is behind schedule in building the proper infrastructure, and work won’t be finished until late 2017, per the New York Daily News, but 1,295 apartments and 225 homes are planned on the vacant land. Financing is expected to close by the end of this year. Nehemiah, the Department of Design and Construction, Metro Industrial Areas Foundation and Monadnock Construction are developing.
