Central Park Tower Officially Tops Out 1,550 Feet Above Midtown, Becoming World’s Tallest Residential Building

Central Park Tower, aka 217 West 57th Street, has finally reached its long-awaited milestone. Construction workers have reached top of the reinforced concrete structure, while work on the reflective glass curtain wall is closing in on the upper floors of what is now the tallest residential building in New York and the highest roof in the Western Hemisphere. The 1,550-foot tall reinforced concrete skyscraper is designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill and developed by Extell, which is expecting a $4 billion sellout. The Nordstrom retail component is getting ready for its debut next month.

Extell, the developer behind some of the most prominent projects in New York City such as Central Park Tower, One57, Brooklyn Point, and One Manhattan Square, recently filed demolition permits for two four-story structures at 724 and 726 Eighth Avenue. Located at the busy corner of West 45th Street and Eighth Avenue, the block-wide development stirred interest in early 2018 when a concept proposal was release. The construction crane has been assembled at the site of the future Hard Rock Hotel at 159 West 48th Street, signaling that work is set to commence on the Times Square development. Located between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue, the 225,000-square-foot, 445-room hotel is being designed by Berg + Moss Architects and developed by Extell in partnership with Hard Rock International. The plot measures 13,000 square feet and has yet to see the superstructure rise above street level.
