COOKFOX Architect’s 24-story Flatiron District project at 39 West 23rd Street is now topped out. Wedged in the middle of one of Manhattan’s busiest thoroughfares between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, the reinforced concrete structure features a cantilever on the eastern elevation above its adjacent low-rise neighbor. Anbau Enterprises is the developer of the residential building, which actually consists of two superstructures separated by an internal courtyard.

Scaffolding Assembly Begins on the Flatiron Building for Exterior Restoration, in Flatiron District

A large amount of black netting and scaffolding is going up on all sides of the limestone and terracotta curtain wall of the Flatiron Building as it embarks on a nearly yearlong renovation. Designed by Daniel Burhnam, the 117-year-old steel-framed landmark is a classic example of the old New York architecture and continues to draw people from around the world to take in its iconic prow at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue.
