A deteriorating piece of Greenwich Village dating back to the time of President Andrew Jackson will be demolished. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a proposal for a new building at 327 Bleecker Street.
A 150-year-old landmarked warehouse at 80 White Street in Chinatown is about to become offices, retail, and one apartment.
Alteration plans were filed with the Department of Buildings yesterday to convert the six-story loft building between Broadway and Lafayette Street. Construction tool manufacturing company General Tools has occupied the building for decades, and the firm’s former chairman, Gerald Weinstein, has owned the property for at least 40 years. Tax photos from the ’70s show the firm’s name emblazoned above the cast iron columns on the ground floor.
A four-story building dating back to well before the Civil War, but in quite the state of disrepair, won’t be demolished just yet. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission decided not to approve a proposal to demolish the structure at 327 Bleecker Street and replace it with a new four-story structure. While the commissioners did seem to be open to the demolition, especially given the endorsement of the Department of Buildings, the proposed replacement was not deemed appropriate.
