Snøhetta’s award-winning design studio has transformed the surrounding public spaces at 550 Madison Avenue in East Midtown, Manhattan. The new garden area will increase existing public open space to more than 21,000 square feet with the addition of a café, new planters, seating, and public bathrooms.
Gensler and The Olayan Group have revealed renderings of the dramatic renovation and modernization of 550 Madison Avenue. The iconic 647-foot-tall commercial skyscraper is located in Midtown East and was originally completed by architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee in 1984.
The installation of new glass curtain walls on the lower levels of 388 Greenwich Street and its annex at 390 Greenwich Street is almost complete. The taller, 39-story office building rises above the Tribeca waterfront across from Pier 25 and Pier 26. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the 14-story-high glass envelope, while Gensler is leading the interior renovations in both structures.
Architecture firm Gensler will again appear before the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission in defense of proposals to construct a rooftop addition at One Broadway in Battery Park, Manhattan. Following lukewarm feedback from the commission, new renderings reveal an overall reduction of mass including structural height, exterior cladding, and shape.
