15-Story Senior Housing Building Planned at 139 East 56th Street, Midtown East

Hines and Welltower Inc. are planning a 15-story senior-housing facility at 139 East 56th Street, located at the corner of Lexington Avenue in Midtown East. The duo recently acquired the site, which is currently occupied by a two-story, 7,000-square-foot commercial building, for an undisclosed amount, according to Bloomberg. The planned structure would feature assisted-living units and memory car services, although the number of units plan is not currently known. The existing building will be demolished, although a TGI Fridays restaurant must first vacant the premises.

82-Story, 139-Unit Residential Supertall Rising At 53 West 53rd Street, Midtown

It was in September of 2015 that YIMBY last brought you a construction update on the 82-story, 139-unit supertall residential tower underway at 53 West 53rd Street, in Midtown. At the time, foundation work was well underway at the site, and now the structure is up two stories above street level, as seen in photos by Tectonic (h/t Curbed). The luxury tower, dubbed 53W53, is being designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel. Thierry Despont is designing the interiors of the residential units. The apartments will come in one- to six-bedroom configurations, and the largest listing is currently a seven-bedroom penthouse. Amenities include a pool, a library, a wine vault, a fitness center, and a lounge. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will also be located on the bottom floors of the building. Hines and Pontiac Land Group are the developers, and completion is expected in 2017.

RFR Realty’s 63-story, 94-unit luxury residential tower at 100 East 53rd Street has been rising since early last year, with in-depth renderings of it being revealed later that fall. The tower has since topped out at 711 feet above street level, according to Curbed. Units will come in one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom configurations, and one of the two four-bedroom duplexes will be a 6,517 square-foot penthouse. The first two floors will house a food court and a restaurant, and floors three and four will host amenities. Hines and Vanke are partnered with RFR, and Foster + Partners is the design architect. William T. Georgis is designing the interiors and SLCE Architects is serving as the architect of record. Completion is expected in early 2017.
