Situated to the west of the Solow Building on a site that was once the home of the original Rizzoli Bookstore and several other low-slung buildings, 27-33 West 57th Street is one of the most prime sites on Billionare’s Row. The property is in the hands of developer LeFrak, and today YIMBY has the first look at what may eventually rise on the Midtown site in the near future.
Construction has topped out on the 43-story, 376-unit mixed-use tower, dubbed Ellipse, at 1-25 14th Street, located in the Newport section of Jersey City, N.J. The structure, which is now receiving glass installation on its 27th floor, can be seen thanks to photos posted to the YIMBY Forums. The 592,800-square-foot tower’s apartments will be rentals, ranging from studios to three-bedrooms. There will be 24,000 square feet of amenities, as well as a retail component near street level. The LeFrak Organization is the developer. Arquitectonica is the design architect and Haines, Lundberg & Waehler (HLW) is the executive architect. Completion is expected later this year.
Back in December of 2015, YIMBY reported on the groundbreaking of the planned 43-story, 376-unit residential tower, dubbed Ellipse, at the end of 14th Street in the Newport section of Jersey City. Now, the structure is four stories above street level, as seen in photos by JC_Heights via the YIMBY Forums. The new 444-foot-tall building will encompass 592,800 square feet and will include a retail component on the lower levels. The residential units will be rental apartments. LeFrak is developing the project, and Arquitectonica is behind its design. Completion is expected sometime in 2017.
The stunningly tall towers rising along 57th Street are taking the Manhattan skyline to a whole new level. Despite their relatively small footprints, some projects are actually replacing true architectural gems. Between the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2016, the LeFrak Organization and Vornado Realty leveled three pre-war buildings at 27-33 West 57th Street. Although the latest reports indicated a “seven star hotel,” final plans are still unknown. Given the site’s Billionaires’ Row location and proximity to Central Park, whatever gets built will most likely be very tall, and very expensive.
The skyline of Jersey City is on its way to getting another addition. It was announced Wednesday that the LeFrak Organization, which has been building in the city for decades, broke ground for a 43-story building, dubbed Ellipse, in the Newport section at the city’s northern end, just south of the Hoboken border.
