Construction is complete on The Civilian, a 27-story hotel at 305 West 48th Street in Hell’s Kitchen, and the property is preparing to open to the public later this week. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects and developed by Bright Management with Rockwell Group as the interior designer, the 303-foot-tall tower spans 73,000 square feet, with 203 guest rooms spread across 59,000 square feet. Joy Construction served as the general contractor for The Civilian, which is located at the corner of West 48th Street and Eighth Avenue, a short walk from Times Square and the Theater District.

Excavation Progresses at 15 Beekman Street In The Financial District, Manhattan

Excavation is progressing at 15 Beekman Street, the site of a 27-story academic center and dormitory for Pace University in the Financial District. Designed by Manish Chadha of Ismael Leyva Architects and developed by SL Green Realty, the 338-foot-tall structure will yield 213,084 square feet with classrooms, dorms, a dining facility, a library, and a learning center. The building will be built with a cellar, sub-cellar, and a 20-foot-long rear yard. New Line Structures & Development LLC is the general contractor for the Lower Manhattan project, which is alternatively addressed as 126-132 Nassau Street and located at the corner of Beekman and Nassau Streets.

Construction is progressing on The Collection, an eight-story residential building at 401 West Street in Manhattan’s West Village. Designed by Thomas Juul Hansen and Hill West Architects and developed by Wainbridge Capital, the ten-unit project is being built by Vector Building Corporation on a relatively narrow plot between West 10th and Charles Streets along the Hudson River waterfront. Work Resumes on Anish Kapoor’s Bean Sculpture at 56 Leonard Street in Tribeca, Manhattan

Work is nearing completion on Anish Kapoor’s reflective “bean” sculpture at the base of 56 Leonard Street, an 831-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Tribeca. The last curved sections of the amorphous work of art have finally been assembled, closing off the missing outer section facing the corner of Leonard and Church Streets. 56 Leonard Street was designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Hill West Architects and stands as one of the tallest structures in Lower Manhattan, with a distinguished massing of irregular cantilevering floors. Anish Kapoor is also known for designing Chicago’s chrome steel-plated Cloud Gate and the ArcelorMittal Orbit from the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
