PENN2’s Overhaul Continues at Two Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan

Work continues on the renovation of PENN2, a 31-story mid-century commercial building at Two Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by MdeAS Architects and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the project involves a full-scale overhaul of the 412-foot-tall structure’s 1.61 million square feet of office space, replacement of its façade with a modern glass curtain wall, and the construction of a multi-story cantilevering volume along Seventh Avenue. GMSLLP is the façade consultant and Turner Construction Company and Skanska are the contractors for the property, which is located between West 31st and West 33rd Streets and a central part of the Penn District revitalization that will transform the area surrounding Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

The second-tallest building on our year-end construction countdown is PENN 15, a 1,200-foot commercial supertall at 15 Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Foster + Partners and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the 56-story skyscraper will yield 2.7 million square feet of office space and stand as the centerpiece of the 7.4-million-square-foot Penn District master plan. Northstar Contracting Group is the demolition contractor for the property, which is located along Seventh Avenue between West 32nd and 33rd Streets.

PENN 2’s Eight-Story Addition Tops Out at 2 Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan

Last week, Vornado Realty Trust, Turner Construction Company, and Skanska celebrated the topping out of the new eight-story expansion at PENN 2, a 31-story commercial tower at Two Penn Plaza in Midtown. Designed by MdeAS Architects, the cantilevering addition is part of a full-scale overhaul project involving the curtain wall replacement and modernization of the mid-century structure’s 1.61 million square feet of office space. The 412-foot-tall building is located along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd Streets, and is part of the massive Penn District revitalization plan that will add ten new towers to the area surrounding Penn Station and Madison Square Garden in the coming years.

Turner Construction Company is the general contractor for the property, which is located along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and 33rd Streets, directly adjacent to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

Designed by Foster + Partners and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the 2.7 million-square-foot tower will replace the aging Hotel Pennsylvania and stand as the tallest component in the 7.4 million-square-foot Penn District master plan. 401 Hotel Reit is the owner and Northstar Contracting Group is the demolition contractor for the property, which is bound by Seventh Avenue to the west, West 32nd Street to the south, and West 33rd Street to the north.

Fresh renderings by DBOX shed new light on PENN 15, a 56-story, 1,200-foot-tall commercial skyscraper at 15 Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Foster + Partners and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the 2.7 million-square-foot supertall will rise from the site of the Hotel Pennsylvania, which has been closed since early 2020 and is beginning the demolition process. The tower will be the tallest component in the 7.4-million-square-foot Penn District master plan, on a plot bound by Seventh Avenue to the west, West 32nd Street to the south, and West 33rd Street to the north.

PENN 2 is immediately to the east of Madison Square Garden and is one component within the Penn District revitalization scheme that calls for the construction and redevelopment of several buildings surrounding Penn Station in the coming years. Turner Construction Company is the general contractor for the project.

Designed by MdeAS Architects and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the project involves the replacement of the 53-year-old structure’s dark façade with a much lighter glass enclosure. The 412-foot-tall, 1.61-million-square-foot tower was originally designed by Charles Luckman Associates and stands along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and 33rd Streets, immediately to the east of Madison Square Garden. PENN 2 is one of several buildings in the Penn Station revitalization plan, which YIMBY covered in an article last week.

YIMBY spotted a series of new and updated interior and exterior renderings by DBOX of Penn 15, a massive 1,270-foot supertall designed by Foster + Partners at 15 Penn Plaza. The mammoth 2.8 million-square-foot, 57-story office project is being developed by Vornado Realty Trust and is part of the much larger 7.4 million-square-foot Penn District master plan in Midtown, Manhattan. The redevelopment aims to transform and revitalize the area between Sixth and Seventh Avenues and West 32nd and West 34th Streets with a total of eight new buildings. All of which would surround the 109-year-old James A. Farley Building and Skidmore Owings & Merrill‘s newly opened Moynihan Train Hall, as well as One and Two Penn Plaza and Madison Square Garden, which itself has also seen grandiose proposals to be re-imagined.

Created by DBOX, the images highlight Penn 15, a 1,270-foot supertall designed by Foster + Partners at 15 Penn Plaza. The overall plan aims to transform and revitalize the cityscape between Sixth and Seventh Avenues and West 32nd and West 34th Streets with a total of eight new skyscrapers surrounding the 109-year-old James A. Farley Building and Skidmore Owings & Merrill‘s newly opened Moynihan Train Hall, as well as One and Two Penn Plaza and Madison Square Garden.
