Cornell Tech’s 26-story, 250-unit Passive House residential building, dubbed CornellTECH Residential and being built as part of Cornell’s 10-building Roosevelt Island campus project, has now topped out and is receiving its façade. The student and faculty dormitory is roughly 70 percent complete, according to a Curbed NY report. The unit configurations range from studios to three-bedrooms, and amenities include a fitness center and a lounge/dining area with a kitchen on the 26th floor. Handel Architects is behind the design of the residential building, which is set to be the largest Passive House structure in the world.
YIMBY last brought you a construction update in September, when foundation work was just wrapping up on multiple buildings of Cornell Tech’s planned Roosevelt Island campus. Since then, phase one’s academic buildings and residential tower have risen in the form of steel beams and concrete pours, respectively. Now, Snøhetta has been tasked to design the Verizon Executive Education Building, The Real Deal reports. It will be a conference center and is included in the first construction phase, which is due for completion in mid-2017. The other three buildings going up are the Bloomberg Center, The Bridge, and CornellTECH Residential, which are being designed by Morphosis Architecture, Weiss/Manfredi Architecture, and Handel Architects.
The New York Public Library plans to build a new Roosevelt Island branch at the site of the existing building at 502 Main Street. Located in the East River between Queens and Manhattan island, Roosevelt Island is politically part of Manhattan. According to Curbed NY, the new library will measure 5,465 square feet and will feature a 670 square-foot community room, a children’s room and teen space, as well as many more computers. The old 2,200 square-foot facility at 524 Main Street is reportedly struggling to keep up with public demand. Smith-Miller+Hawkinson Architects is designing the new library, which is scheduled to open in late 2017 or early 2018.
Cornell broke ground on its new tech campus on Roosevelt Island in June, and now a spokesperson for the project has sent along a few photos documenting its progress.
The 26-story, 350-dorm-unit Passive House building in the works at Cornell Tech Campus, on Roosevelt Island below the 59th Street Bridge, is now under construction, according to The New York Times. The 270,000 square-foot building, designed by Handel Architects, would be the tallest Passive House building in the world upon completion in 2017. Hudson Companies, Cornell Tech and Related Companies are developing, and the entire $2 billion campus should be built out over the next two decades.
