Now that exterior work has completed on 50 West Street – the 64-story, 191-unit mixed-use tower dubbed simply “50 West” under development in the Financial District – crews are now focused on building a 6,800-square-foot public plaza around the base of the building and a pedestrian bridge over West Street (a.k.a. the West Side Highway). Renderings of the spaces have been revealed by the Wall Street Journal. The 24-hour plaza will feature an art gallery, a café, vegetation, and seating. The pedestrian bridge, dubbed the West Thames Street Bridge, will feed directly into the plaza. It will boast steel structural supports and a glass roof and walls. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) is building the new pedestrian bridge, which will replace the Rector Street bridge located a block northward. Demolition of the Rector Street bridge and construction of the new one is expected to last two years.
A slew of affordable housing projects are headed for an industrial slice of the central Bronx sandwiched between the Cross Bronx Expressway and the elevated subway tracks. The latest development to join the list is a 10-story affordable residential building at 1880 Boston Road, in a long-neglected neglected neighborhood known as West Farms.
Last month, the Moinian Group announced that they were planning a condo project at 220 11th Avenue that had been designed by the late, renowned Zaha Hadid. Now, the firm has filed new building applications for the 11-story development in Chelsea.
For years, YIMBY has been reporting on plans for a high-rise residential tower at 118 Fulton Street, between Nassau and Dutch streets in the Financial District. No building exists yet, but the design has apparently changed again, per on-site renderings posted to the YIMBY Forums.
Renderings have been revealed for the 18-unit residential conversion of the former five-story elementary school at 520 West 45th Street, in Hell’s Kitchen. Future views of the exterior and interiors can be seen in a New York Times report. The existing structure will remain the same size and will boast 28,720 square feet of residential space after the conversion, which means the apartments should average 1,595 square feet apiece. They will come in two- and three-bedrooms. Dubbed Inkwell, amenities are set to include a fitness center, laundry facilities, a bike storage room, and an outdoor recreational area on the ground floor. Gotham Organization is the developer and SLCE Architects is serving as the architect of record. AvroKO is designing the interiors. Occupancy can be expected in the fall.
