Statue of Liberty Museum’s Expansion On Track for May 2019 Opening

Construction on the new 26,000 square foot Statue of Liberty Museum, located on the western side of Liberty Island, topped off in December 2017. Already ahead of schedule, it is set to open to the public in May 2019. The $70 million project, designed by FXCollaborative and ESI Design and built by Phelps Construction Group, features a steel structural frame, a new elevated concrete foundation, and a green roof. All of this comes as part of the new design that was revealed in October 2016 by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and the United States Department of the Interior.

Liberty Island’s Planned 26,000-Square-Foot Statue Of Liberty Museum Approved

Plans for the 26,000-square-foot Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island were approved earlier this week, with crews holding a groundbreaking ceremony at the site yesterday, Curbed NY reported. The main feature of the FXFOWLE Architects-designed structure, of course, will be its museum, which will include a mural called The Liberty Star, the Immersive Theater, the Engagement Gallery, and the Inspiration Gallery. There will also be a bookstore and administrative offices. The project is a joint effort by The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., and the National Park Service. Openning is expected in 2019.
