One of the most interesting condominium developments in Brooklyn draws inspiration from a distant land. It’s called Oosten, and it’s the product of Chinese developer XIN Development, Dutch designer Piet Boon, and Brooklyn-based think! architecture and design pllc. When we last checked in on 267 Rogers Avenue in southern Crown Heights, the planned five-story rental building was barely more than a hole in the ground. Now walls are up, and the building has finally started to take shape.
On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved construction of a new two-unit house at the corner of St. Felix Street and Hanson Place in the Brooklyn Academy of Music Historic District. The new construction at 147 St. Felix Street, a lot vacant since 1999, will rise three stories and will hopefully fare better than the site’s two previous occupants.
Earlier this year, YIMBY reported on the topping out of XIN Development’s seven-story, 216-unit residential building under construction at 429 Kent Avenue, located a block from the East River in South Williamsburg. Today, a vast majority of the façade work has been completed, courtesy of Brownstoner. Known as the Oosten, it will include 201 condominiums and 15 townhouse units, as well as a 10,000 square-foot art gallery on the first two floors. Work is also well underway on the 14,000 square-foot inner courtyard. The developer is the U.S. branch of Beijing-based Xinyuan Real Estate Co., and Piet Boon and Think Architecture & Design designed the project. Completion is expected in early 2016.
