PENN 2’s Eight-Story Addition Tops Out at 2 Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan

Last week, Vornado Realty Trust, Turner Construction Company, and Skanska celebrated the topping out of the new eight-story expansion at PENN 2, a 31-story commercial tower at Two Penn Plaza in Midtown. Designed by MdeAS Architects, the cantilevering addition is part of a full-scale overhaul project involving the curtain wall replacement and modernization of the mid-century structure’s 1.61 million square feet of office space. The 412-foot-tall building is located along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd Streets, and is part of the massive Penn District revitalization plan that will add ten new towers to the area surrounding Penn Station and Madison Square Garden in the coming years.

Exterior Work Wraps Up on Google Headquarters at 550 Washington Street in Hudson Square, Manhattan

Construction has reached the final stages on Google’s 1.3 million-square-foot headquarters at 550 Washington Street in Hudson Square. Designed by COOKFOX Architects and developed by Oxford Properties, the project involves the repurposing and vertical expansion of the former St. John’s Terminal building along the Hudson River waterfront. The 232-foot-tall structure will serve as the centerpiece of the 1.7 million-square-foot “Googleplex” master plan along with 315 Hudson Street and 345 Hudson Street. Turner Construction is the general contractor for the property, which spans two full city blocks between West Street, West Houston Street, Washington Street, and the New York Department of Sanitation building.

Re-cladding work is wrapping up on 660 Fifth Avenue, a 39-story commercial tower in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and developed by Brookfield Properties, the project involves extensive interior renovations of the 64-year-old building’s 1.25 million square feet of office space and the complete replacement of its mid-century curtain wall with a more transparent modern envelope. Turner Construction Company is the general contractor for the property, which is located along Fifth Avenue between West 52nd and 53rd Streets and was formerly addressed as 666 Fifth Avenue. The developer is aiming for LEED Gold certification.

Façade work is coming to a close on The Spiral, a 66-story commercial supertall at 66 Hudson Boulevard in Hudson Yards. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group and developed by Tishman Speyer, the 1,041-foot-tall skyscraper will yield 2.85 million square feet of office space and is expected to cost nearly $3.7 billion. Turner Construction Company is the general contractor, Banker Steel provided the steel work, and Permasteelisa is serving as the contractor for the glass enclosure for The Spiral, which occupies a full city block between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues and 34th and 35th Streets.
