Construction of the 57-story tower restarted in late 2012
Construction of new 57-story residential tower has resumed in northern Tribeca. Erection of 56 Leonard Street first began in mid-2007, but was put on hold in 2010. In 2012, developer Alexico Group re-launched the project with new contractor Lend Lease U.S. Construction Co. The site is located at the southwest corner of Church Street, on the same side of the block shared by New York Law School, where a new library was built in 2009.
The 56 Leonard tower was designed by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog and de Meuron, and features 145 luxury condominium apartments ranging from two to five bedrooms, as well as 10 penthouses on the uppermost floors. Once completed it will be the tallest residential tower in Tribeca and one of the tallest in all of Lower Manhattan.
Superstructure construction began in early 2013 for approximately 18 months, through spring 2014 -- that schedule accounts for the innovative design of the skyscraper, including its cantilevered apartments and balconies. Full completion is expected in spring 2015.
Foundation work at the site was completed in late 2012. Superstructure construction continues through mid-2014, with full completion expected in spring 2015.
