These photos from SHoP’s website show a project with a supposedly ‘confidential’ location, which is actually 225 West 57th Street. The design was part of a competition Gary Barnett held for the new supertall, which will be the future home of Nordstrom’s only location in Manhattan.
Although SHoP’s proposal was rejected, it’s still entertaining to see one of the possibilities that could have risen on 225 West 57th. The building’s retail component–at the base–is clearly suited to a department store’s flagship location, with soaring ceilings and dramatic windows.

The overall design isn’t as impressive. The physical separation of the building’s different retail, hotel, and residential components makes the design look clunky, even though it appears to soar well over 1,000 feet.
Barnett’s final choice remains to be seen, but it’s surely a show-stopper. After all, 432 Park is rising just four blocks to the East, and Extell has every incentive to take the tallest title back. Every little epithet helps when it comes to sales of luxury buildings!
