Construction Update: 50 UN Plaza

The Foster-designed 50 UN Plaza is now topped-out, and its glass facade is roughly halfway up the tower. Developed by the Zeckendorfs – who have a proven track record building astronomically expensive projects – the skyscraper stands 44 stories and 520 feet, making it a relatively significant addition to New York’s skyline along the East River.

50 UN Plaza is still dwarfed by the neighboring Trump World Tower, which – until recently – held the title of New York’s tallest residential building. Nevertheless, the building appears to be very high-quality, and Foster’s penchant for luxury towers appears unbroken; the louvered eastern and western facades add variety to what would otherwise be plain glass, and also showcase the tower’s slim figure.

With 88 total units, sales are launching this fall. Due to its location, the tower is in a unique position and faces relatively little competition, as no comparatively luxurious developments are rising in the vicinity. While prices won’t challenge the Zeckendorf’s 15 Central Park West, the building will likely rival the Trump World Tower for the most expensive address along the East River.
