Centered just below Central Park’s southern edge, super-slender supertall 111 West 57th Street will probably be iconic before it is even finished. Of course, that won’t be for a couple of years. However, some visible progress is being made at the construction site in Midtown.

The tower has risen at least seven stories, as seen in a photo posted to the YIMBY Forums by Tectonic. About three stories were visible at the beginning of June. The project includes and wraps behind the landmarked sixteen-story-tall Steinway Hall building. So, there will be parts of it that won’t be visible until they rise above the landmark.

JDS Development Group and the Property Markets Group are the co-developers, and the design comes from SHoP Architects.

The tower will eventually rise 82 stories to a height of 1,428 feet. Given the early stage the project is in, current building permits don’t accurately reflect the scope. However, they do include very large numbers. According to them, the pre-construction space occupied 10,734 square feet, but the proposed total space will be 316,396 square feet.

There will be 12 residences within Steinway Hall and an additional 46 within the new tower. Those will all be full-floor condominiums. Without further details, there is no way to say how many bedrooms they will have or what their square footage range will be.

The project will also include tens of thousands of feet of retail space.

The site is just west of Sixth Avenue, and the F train. Completion is slated for early 2018.

  5. No such thing as “too tall” when it comes to New York, though I admit this one is a bit slim.
Would like to finally see towers taller than 2,000 feet in Manhattan instead of Shanghai and Dubai.

  6. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! People will travel to NYC just to see this. I will

  9. Out of all the new buildings going up in NYC, THIS is my favorite and will make a special trip to NYC just to see it completed. Simply gorgeous! JDS has/is making some beautiful buildings.
