Construction Update: 125 West 28th Street, 218 West 35th Street

Gene Kaufman has yet another hotel under construction in Chelsea, at 125 West 28th Street. The building’s foundation is nearing completion and while it remains invisible from the street, it will soon be moving upwards. Luckily it will only be 18 stories tall (here’s a list of all DOB permits for the site).

The neighboring Holiday Garden Inn at 121 West 28th was also designed by Kaufman, and the building visible in the gap where 125 West 28th will rise is also a Kaufman. There appears to be no stopping Kaufmanitis, which is slowly overtaking all of Manhattan.

Also below is 218 West 35th Street, which–per DOB filings–will be a four-story retail structure. That seems like it would eventually serve as a podium for something larger on top, as permits were briefly filed for a 38-story hotel, but then withdrawn. Crains also reported that a 28-story hotel was going to rise on the site, but no permits have been filed indicating that’s going to be the case.

  1. I’m pretty sure a hotel tower is planned for 218 West 35th Street, with the lowrise retail facing 34th, and the hotel facing 35th.

  2. Indeed, though it remains to be seen how tall it will rise. No permits have been filed but it seems they should be shortly.
