Greenpoint Landing Associates and Park Tower Group, alongside city and elected officials, recently celebrated the grand opening of 35 Commercial Street, a 22-story affordable housing project in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The opening of the building marks a notable step in the Greenpoint Landing master plan by providing 374 permanently affordable housing units to the campus, including 57 reserved for formerly homeless individuals. The development was completed in partnership with Breaking Ground, a nonprofit social service organization, and is located at the corner of Commercial Street and Bell Slip near the Newton Creek waterfront.

35 Commercial Street is a part of the larger Greenpoint Landing development, which plans to yield 5,500 residential units and expansive public open spaces. The building, which was designed by Handel Architects, is intended to align with the neighborhood’s industrial past, featuring a brick façade, vaulted brick entrance, and landscaped courtyards designed by Alive Structures.

The development prioritizes sustainability and modern living, featuring all-electric apartments with advanced variable refrigerant flow technology for heating and cooling, as well as floor-to-ceiling with Manhattan skyline views. The building features a variety of amenities, including children’s play areas, a fitness center, and Wi-Fi access throughout.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate the addition of nearly 400 new affordable homes in Greenpoint,” said Maria Torres-Springer, deputy mayor for housing, economic development, and workforce. “35 Commercial Street, and the larger Greenpoint Landing development, are providing thousands of environmentally conscious opportunities for families, including formerly homeless households, to call Greenpoint home. I’m grateful for the partnerships that have driven this project forward. At a time when the housing vacancy rate is so low, it’s critical to work together to create more affordable homes for New Yorkers across all neighborhoods in New York City.”

New Yorkers must applaud the developers’ commitment, that no one wants to kick their own child out of the house: Thanks.

  3. Great project, but won’t all electric be expensive for the lower income tenants?
