NoMad has been experiencing an incredible amount of construction over the last few years, especially for new hotels. Today, YIMBY has a look at 1225 Broadway, the future Virgin Hotel, which is being developed by the Lam Group. New images reveal that construction has now reached the tenth floor, surpassing the tower’s base, which will eventually create 100,000 square feet of retail space. The full footprint of the podium remains to be completed.

Our last update from 2017 reported construction had almost reached ground level. The latest progress photos reveal that foundation work for the hotel tower is finished. An official date has not been released, but topping-out is likely in a little over a year.

The 476-foot tall structure will yield 400,000 square feet, with 300,000 square feet dedicated to the hotel, and remaining area dedicated to the retail podium. The 38-story building will bring 460 guest rooms to the neighborhood.

VOA Associates will be responsible for the design.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Leave me with construction. And you stop watching TV and turn to Virgin Hotel. (Thanks to Andrew Nelson)

  2. Looks unstable…
Speaking of being or looking unstable, wasn’t their a new office skyscraper a dozen years ago or so,
around 30th street in midtown, that started leaning a bit,
presumably because of poorer supporting subsoil/bedrock in that area?
And of course the design flaws in the support structure of the slant-top Citicorp building
caused some serious concerns and required subsequent fixes.

  3. The design and massing are a very odd fit for this stretch of Broadway (the design would be much more at home across the block on Sixth), but the retail should be good and I guess people will enjoy being on the terraces.

  4. Virgin has no platform m to operate a hotel of this scale.

Shoddy concrete work going on at this building. Concrete looks like swiss cheese when formwork removed. I’ll never go in this building or walk near it. Needs to pull it down and start over.

  6. So it’s ungainly, it probably won’t be a good hotel, and it’s going to fall down. But otherwise it’s OK?
