The vacant lots that remind Crown Heights of its worst years are slowly giving way to development. On the western edge of the neighborhood, in a lot next to the Franklin Avenue shuttle tracks, a new six-story building is in the works.
The development would rise at 916 Bergen Street, between Franklin and Classon avenues. New building applications filed last week call for 12 apartments spread across 10,435 square feet, for average units of 869 square feet. One duplex apartment with an upper mezzanine will occupy the first floor, followed by two apartments on each of the remaining floors. Two sixth-floor penthouses will get private roof decks, and the rest of the building’s residents will have access to a shared terrace on the top floor.
The developer is Cheskel Landau, doing business as an LLC based in South Williamsburg. Red Hook-based architect Nataliya Donskoy, who heads ND Architecture & Design, will be responsible for the design.
The 20-foot-wide lot last changed hands in 2011, when an LLC headquartered nearby on Dean Street purchased it for $318,000. Although the property hasn’t sold recently, it was on the market recently asking $2 million.
