Exterior work is progressing on 212 West 93rd Street, a 14-story condominium building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Located between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues, the 65,000-square-foot project is designed by Eran Chen, head of ODA, and developed by Landsea Homes and Leyton Properties, which acquired the 9,000-square-foot plot from the Shaare Zedek Congregation for $34.3 million. It was last reported that the property will yield 20 units designed by GRADE New York and marketed by The Lindsey Stokes Team, a division of real estate brokerage Compass.

Since our last update in early September, the reinforced concrete superstructure has been completely covered in a thick veil of scaffolding and black netting. Large white plastic sheets cover the majority of the upper floors, and it will likely be a little while before we can get a good impression of the external progress behind these barriers. Nonetheless, we can now see how the final height and massing fit with the scale of the surrounding neighborhood.

ODA’s rendering depicts the main northern elevation with a series of staggered, irregular rectilinear volumes and voids that cantilever and stack on top of one another. The curtain wall appears to be designed as a grid of floor-to-ceiling windows surrounded by individual frames. The setbacks will make way for landscaped outdoor terraces.

212 West 93rd Street will yield 39,543 square feet of residential space, and homes are expected to come in one- to four-bedroom layouts finished with handcrafted millwork and oversized wood-clad windows. A select few units are full-floor spreads that include private outdoor terraces. Amenities include a 24-hour attended lobby, a private rooftop terrace, fitness studio, children’s playroom, pet spa station, and bike storage, as well as dedicated storage spaces that are available for purchase. The cellar, ground floor, and second floor will serve as the new home for the Shaare Zedek Congregation.

The closest subways are the 1, 2, and 3 trains at the 96th Street Station on Broadway.

212 West 93rd Street will wrap up construction at the end of this year.

  1. I do have to admit that I quite like this type of design, as done by ODA. But, as per the renderings, this one is definitely not one of my favorites. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out in reality.

You reported progress with evidence, I have nothing to argue with these details. I just look and follow what I desire: Thanks to Michael Young.

  3. Another example of “Jengaism”,
obviously “inspired” by the tower on Leonard Street?
    No thanks…

  4. The Upper West Side is under a Renaissance of so many new beautiful buildings. Wish they would push them even further north into the low 100’s.

  5. Whether or not one accepts the “jengaism” of ODA’s imput into the architectural culture, it’s more unfortunate that what was an amazing classical design of an historic neighborhood synagogue gets shoe-boxed into a flat paneled anonymous facade that offers little to uplift aesthetically: the facade in the rendering could be a medical facility, a branch bank, or a mediocre office building….the question is, why did the synagogue settle? (I’d offer to design a moderately more embellished facade for free)…..
