A Queens-based movie studio plans to build two new production facilities in Soundview, right along the Bronx River waterfront in the southeastern part of the borough.
Architect Gerald Caliendo filed plans yesterday for two big commercial buildings at 801 Colgate Avenue and 1410 Story Avenue, two vacant industrial properties on either side of Bronx Academy Senior High School. They sit between the waterfront, Colgate Avenue, Story Avenue and Soundview Park, about a block from the Bruckner Expressway.
The owners, York Studios, run a 40,000-square-foot movie production studio in Maspeth, and now they’re expanding their operations to the Bronx, where they managed to find property that was both accessible and cheap. They acquired the collection of vacant lots for $7,100,000 in 2012, public records show.
Both buildings will rise three stories and offer space for production studios, woodworking, offices and storage, according to Schedule A filings. The larger building, at 801 Colgate, will encompass nearly 100,000 square feet. It will also have four loading docks and a 47-car parking lot.
The second building on Story Avenue will house 31,073 square feet of commercial space, along with four loading docks and 64 off-street parking spaces.
When the project is finished, it will include 300,000 square feet of production space across eight studios, according to DNAinfo. Construction is expected to begin this summer and finish next year.
Since the property stretches over 80,000 square feet and is zoned only for manufacturing, this seems like a productive use. John Battista, York Studios’ Executive Vice President of Production, told DNA that the project would bring “hundreds of jobs” to the Bronx.
