Google Opens St. John’s Terminal Headquarters at 550 Washington Street in Hudson Square, Manhattan

Google held a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the opening of its New York headquarters in the expanded 1.3-million-square-foot St. John’s Terminal building at 550 Washington Street in Hudson Square, Manhattan. Designed by COOKFOX Architects and developed by Oxford Properties, the 12-story project involved the adaptive reuse of a 90-year-old former freight terminal, and serves as the centerpiece of the 1.7-million-square-foot Googleplex master plan along with 315 Hudson Street and 345 Hudson Street. Gensler was the interior designer, Future Green Studio Corp. was the landscape designer, Gilsanz Murray Steficek LLP was the structural engineer, and Structure Tone and Turner Construction were joint general contractors for the structure, which stands 232 feet tall and spans two full city blocks bound by West Street, West Houston Street, Washington Street, and the New York Department of Sanitation building.

Construction has reached the final stages on Google’s 1.3 million-square-foot headquarters at 550 Washington Street in Hudson Square. Designed by COOKFOX Architects and developed by Oxford Properties, the project involves the repurposing and vertical expansion of the former St. John’s Terminal building along the Hudson River waterfront. The 232-foot-tall structure will serve as the centerpiece of the 1.7 million-square-foot “Googleplex” master plan along with 315 Hudson Street and 345 Hudson Street. Turner Construction is the general contractor for the property, which spans two full city blocks between West Street, West Houston Street, Washington Street, and the New York Department of Sanitation building.

Designed by COOKFOX Architects and developed by the joint venture Hudson Square Properties, which includes Trinity Church Wall Street, Hines, and Norges Bank Investment Management, the 270,000-square-foot structure connects on nearly every floor to the adjacent 345 Hudson Street via a horizontal overbuild for a total of 715,000 square feet of leasable office space, with floor plates up to 87,000 square feet each. Tishman Construction is the contractor for the property, which is located on a rectangular plot of land bound by Greenwich Street to the west, Charlton Street to the south, and King Street to the north.

The project is also being designed as one of the city’s most sustainable buildings. Tishman Construction is the contractor for the building, which is rising on a plot bound by Greenwich Street to the west, Charlton Street to the south, and King Street to the north.

Designed by COOKFOX Architects and developed by Oxford Properties, the 232-foot-tall building is the centerpiece of the company’s “Googleplex” master plan that will encompass a grand total of 1.7 million square feet across three separate structures. The other two sites include 315 Hudson Street and 345 Hudson Street. Turner Construction is responsible for building the 12-story project over the brick-clad base that was historically known as St. John’s Terminal. 550 Washington Street spans two full city blocks between West Street, West Houston Street, Washington Street, and the New York Department of Sanitation building.

Google to Purchase St. John’s Terminal Campus in Hudson Square for $2.1 Billion
