For decades (with a brief break), Manhattan had a diner, complete with outdoor seating and a tiny parking lot, near the edge of Midtown West/Hell’s Kitchen. Last year, we learned that the Market Diner at 572 Eleventh Avenue (at the corner of West 43rd Street) would be replaced by an apartment building. Now, a photo from our friend Tectonic shows that demolition has begun.

Other New York City diners that bit the dust – the Cheyenne at the corner of West 33rd Street and Ninth Avenue and the Moondance on Sixth Avenue in SoHo – got trucked off to live on elsewhere. Such was not the case here.

The single-story structure that opened in 1962 will be replaced by a 13-story mixed-use building developed by the Moinan Group and designed by CetraRuddy. It will rise to 144 feet and encompass 134,939 square feet, according to the latest information from the Department of Buildings.

There will be 163 units across 124,112 square feet of residential space. That works out to an average unit size of just over 761 square feet, indicative of rentals. Those apartments will be laid out as follows: 11 units on the second floor, seventeen units each on floors three through eight, fifteen units on the ninth floor, 10 units on the tenth floor and 11th floors, nine units on the 12th floor, and six units on the 11th floor.

Amenities will include bicycle storage in the cellar and laundry, a gym, a lounge, and outdoor amenity spaces on the second floor. Two units will also have private terraces of about 750 square feet each.

The building will also have 10,827 square feet of commercial space. Retail will occupy the cellar and first floor.
