The first two towers of Hunter’s Point South are now well underway; developed by Related, the complex will eventually yield over 5,000 new affordable housing units. The mega-project is situated on the Long Island City waterfront; the new, eponymous park between the buildings and the East River also just opened.
Construction on the buildings began earlier this year, and the first phase – which will deliver a total of just over 900 units – is expected to be complete by 2014. Several more towers will be built on the southern end of the site, which remains forlorn; the area was formerly dominated by industry and warehouses, so its conversion to modern, affordable housing is especially welcome, given its abandoned state. Further to the north, TF Cornerstone has now completed the build-out of its East Coast Long Island City project, which delivered a total of 2,100 units; the entirety of the Queens waterfront is beginning to take shape.
The larger of the first two Hunter’s Point South towers is 1-50 50th Avenue, and it will have a total of 619 units. Rising 37 floors, the structure takes up an entire city block in an urban-friendly format, and has a ways to go before topping-out. The second high-rise, at 1-55 Borden Avenue, is of a slightly smaller scope – with a total of 306 units – and is already close to reaching its 32-story pinnacle.
All of Hunter’s Point South is expected to be finished by the 2020s. The buildings will extend the neighborhood’s livability as well as the borough’s skyline, and the soon-to-begin Greenpoint Landing will link the development with Brooklyn, as well.
