New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have announced a project that will transform the 122-acre Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a modern port and mixed-use community hub in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The project is projected to create thousands of jobs and generate substantial economic impact. The city will invest $80 million to stabilize piers and $15 million for the addition of an electrified container crane. Beyond that, Governor Hochul has committed $15 million from state funds for a cold storage facility to be constructed.

As a result of the project, the city aims to grow the existing container business for the facility and enable micro-mobility strategies to reduce truck traffic. In addition, the city plans to assemble a task force to engage stakeholders and develop a shared vision for the facility’s new amenities that will be added as a result of the project. New York City has applied for over $350 million in federal funds to optimize the site for international cargo handling and low-carbon freight movement.

“There is so much we can unlock by investing in the Brooklyn Marine Terminal and the Red Hook container terminal,” said Andrew Gounardes, New York State Senator and Brooklyn Marine Terminal Task Force vice chair. “Transferring the property to EDC (Empire Development Corporation) will give us the opportunity to do finally work toward creating a truly 21st century marine terminal. I look forward to working with EDC, the city, the state, and my colleagues in government to engage the community and stakeholders to ensure that we activate our blue ways, tackle the proliferation of last-mile facilities, and unlock economic opportunity.”

  1. Wait they’re going to keep the whole thing a terminal? I live across the street and frankly it’s probably at 25% capacity. They should move the entire operation South to the Army Terminal and turn the whole thing into parks and housing. It’s basically a parking lot and beer distributor at this point. Sure keep some port access to move stuff around the city to reduce truck traffic but it makes zero economic sense to keep this thing a port in the long run.

Will all the ships be required to plug in while at port so they don’t keep burning dirty fuel for electrical power?

When the ship has docked, what you have reported will begin: Thanks.
