In early November, the City Planning Commission approved Hudson Companies’ planned 36-story, 139-unit mixed-use building at 280 Cadman Plaza West, in Brooklyn Heights, and now the City Council has approved the project. According to DNAinfo, Wednesday’s vote was practically the last step before the project gets green-lit. Mayor Bill de Blasio is planning to sign the deal, which will conclude ULURP, the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure. The project overtakes the site of the Brooklyn Heights public library and 26,620 square feet on the ground floor will be dedicated to it. In addition, the Marvel Architects-designed tower will include 9,000 square feet of city-run academic labs and retail space. The property will be sold for $52 million.
As part of the deal, Hudson Companies will build a new 5,000 square-foot library in DUMBO or Vinegar Hill. In addition, two all-affordable residential buildings will be built at 1043 Fulton Street and 907 Atlantic Avenue, in Clinton Hill. Together, the off-site projects will total 117 residential units.

I’m not happy with the encroachment of large buildings on the periphery of Brooklyn Heights—this building is just across Clinton Street from the Landmarked BH with its 50-foot height limit on new construction—but I am becoming resigned to the fact that builders gotta build.
The article about the potential 40-story building at 220 Cadman Plaza West—which will replace a pet store, restaurant, much loved toy store, hair dresser, and large supermarket—eliminating all the stores along Pineapple Walk from Henry Street to CPW, is more upsetting. The northern-facing residents of 101 Clark Street will have their views north toward midtown Manhattan replaced with a bank of apartments. I heard they’re really up in arms about this, while powerless to stop it.
