Construction has broken ground on a new seven-acre Neuroscience Research Complex at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor, a small waterfront hamlet in Suffolk County, Long Island. The complex will add three new buildings and more than 36,000 square feet of labs and research facilities to the campus, which conducts research on developmental neurological disorders like autism and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Each building will be dedicated to a specific area of research and scientific advancement. This includes one for neurodegenerative diseases, a second for brain-body physiology, and a third that will house experiments in quantitative biology and neuro-artificial intelligence. Total project costs are estimated at $57 million.

“With these strategic investments, we are solidifying this region’s standing as a powerhouse for the life sciences industry and building the next great innovation hub right here on Long Island,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul. “Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s work lies at the cutting edge of biomedical research, and thanks to a significant state investment, this new facility will allow it to achieve new and exciting breakthroughs in neuroscience.”

Founded in 1890, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is one of the world’s leading centers for biomedical research. Since then, the campus and scope of work has expanded to research and educational facilities for various types of cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, and quantitative biology.

Funding for the new complex includes a $30 million capital grant provided by New York State’s Transformative Investment Program. Created by Empire State Development in 2015, the program will provide $400 million to regionally significant economic developments.

“Here in New York State, we are committed to growing the jobs and businesses of the future and ensuring that our state remains competitive in the 21st century economy,” Governor Hochul said.

The complex is expected to debut by December 2025.
