The Bromley Companies has unveiled a new artwork by Sam Gilliam in the redesigned lobby of 122 Fifth Avenue in Union Square, Manhattan. The painting, titled “For The ‘Friend’ (2022),” is one of the late Gilliam’s last art pieces he worked on before his passing in 2022.
“For “The Friend” is among Gilliam’s beveled-edge canvases, which he began developing in the 1960s. Created with acrylic on an unprimed canvas that was later stretched on a specially made beveled-edge frame, this present work speaks to his lifelong interest in abstraction.
Pace Gallery worked with an anonymous patron on the acquisition and siting of the artwork.
“Sam Gilliam’s artwork at 122 Fifth Avenue represents the convergence of artistic vision and architectural excellence,” said Nicholas Haines, CEO of The Bromley Companies. “With the addition of this artwork, we’re not only enhancing the building’s aesthetic appeal but also elevating the experience for everyone who enters. It is a testament to our commitment to fostering a vibrant environment in Union Square.”
Bromley initially acquired 122 Fifth Avenue in 1979, marking the company’s first purchase in New York City. Since then, the owner partnered with STUDIOS Architecture to carefully upgrade every corner of the 11-story building. This $100 million capital improvement project included a new rooftop pavilion and terrace, a new lobby and entryway, bike storage, showers, a ground-floor cafe, modern loft-style office spaces, and substantial infrastructure upgrades.

The painting is fine. The building, inside and out, seems to lack any real character….
