Two years ago, Barnard College announced its plans to demolish its library, Lehman Hall, and build an 11-story teaching and learning center in its place. Now the women’s college has filed applications for a 12-story building at 32 Claremont Avenue, mid-block between 116th and 119th Streets in Morningside Heights.

The 189-foot-tall structure will house a library, labs, classrooms, and a cafe, in addition to study and conference spaces, the Columbia Spectator reported last year. The Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill-designed building will include a five-story base and a skinny 12-story tower, according to Barnard’s page on the project.

The library and classrooms will occupy the first three floors, followed by reading rooms on the fourth floor and classrooms on the fifth. The remaining seven stories will be office space for several academic departments, including economics, history, political science and urban studies. Other highlights include five “teaching labs,” a computational science center, and outdoor terraces.

Overall, the structure will span 117,513 square feet.

The university expects to begin demolishing Lehman Hall this winter and aims to open the new building by August 2018. Demolition plans have not yet been filed for the four-story library and office building.
