One of the hundreds of vacant lots in the South Bronx is about to become supportive housing. A non-profit organization has filed plans for a six-story residential facility at 1084 Ogden Avenue in Highbridge, a western Bronx neighborhood just north of Yankee Stadium.
The development will have 50 studio apartments for people with a serious mental illness who are ready to live on their own, according to the developer’s website. They’ll be divided across 29,070 square feet of community facility space, for little average units of 580 square feet.
The first floor will host a lobby, lounge, conference room, community room, and bike storage. Ten units apiece will fill each of the upper floors.
Catania-Nack Architects, which is headquartered in Rockville Centre, N.Y., is designing 1084 Ogden Avenue. H.O.G.A.R. Inc. – Housing Options and Geriatric Association Resources – is developing the project, and the New York State Office of Mental Health is providing all the funding.
The group is based in Longwood, on the other side of the South Bronx near the 2 and 5 trains. They’re also working with BRP Companies on a 105-unit building in Crotona Park. That development will be evenly split between low-income affordable units and housing for mentally ill tenants.
H.O.G.A.R. picked up the 8,400-square-foot lot for $890,000 in 2014.

Bike storage for people with a serious mental illness who are ready to live on their own. It almost sounds like a punchline.
