Construction is nearly finished on 432 Park Avenue, the tallest residential building in the Western hemisphere. Five open-air mechanical floors on the 1,396-foot-tall skyscraper will be lit every day at sunset starting Monday, and we have photos of the display.
The open “drum” floors have mechanical equipment encased in concrete cylinders, and each floor is illuminated with 32 LED lights. The 30-foot-tall cutouts are located on the 31st, 45th, 60th, 74th, and 89th floors. PR reps for the project tell us these photos were taken from a helicopter, which explains the stunning views.
Rafael Viñoly, the tower’s architect, designed the lighting feature in collaboration with HDLC Architectural Lighting Design.
“The illumination of the double-height drum floors was part of the tower’s design from its inception – a way to celebrate and highlight the integral breaks in the building,” Viñoly said in a statement.
The building will be officially lit for the first time next Monday as the sun sets, at 4:40 p.m.
CIM Group and Macklowe Properties developed the building, which holds 106 condos. The pricey apartments start at $17.5 million, but the most expensive unit to sell there so far was an 8,300-square-foot penthouse, for $87.7 million. A $92 million penthouse also hit the market on the 95th floor last month.

Very exciting news! One correction though. Maybe just a discrepancy in the way the floors are being counted, but I believe the wind breaks are on floors 20/21, 34/35, 48/49, 62/63 and 76/77. The top two floors are mechanical/parapet, but not wind breaks.
We’ll have to see it for ourselves. But if the renderings are any indication, it looks to be pretty underwhelming. Uninspired lighting on a boring stack of boxes.
Seeing lighting on the tower is stunning, come together and admire supertall showing its design.
I must admit, it’s growing on me and I’m getting used to its slenderness too.
Color Changes periodically from White might be nice, like Empire State Building
Part of NYC Charm
Round back square by beyond water. Water light airiness in between.
Nice to see there will be always-on lighting, because many of the residents may be out-of-town, leaving blackened windows at night. If there are too many dark windows, the building might have disappeared in the night. Now, this won’t happen.
Haters will hate and these comments don’t disappoint. Maybe the community would not complain about absentee owners if 1/2 of 20% of units were assigned to homeless people at the rent of 30% of gross declared tip cup income.
The lights should be shut off after midnight just like the rest of the tall building in Manhattan. My Windows face the building and it lights up my entire apartment all night long.
that’s why god invented window shades.
