The Upper Upper East Side’s Soon-To-Be Tallest Rising Quickly at 180 East 88th Street

The upper blocks of the Upper East Side are only just starting to sprout legitimately Manhattan-scaled skyscrapers, and what will soon become the tallest in the neighborhood, at 180 East 88th Street, is now rapidly rising. The tower is being developed by DDG, which also does their design in-house, though HTO Architect is listed as the architect of record on the permits.

The latest photos come from Tectonic, and show that the tower has climbed past the lower commercial and community facility floors, and is now rising into the residential portion. The building will eventually stand 31 floors and 523 feet to its rooftop.

YIMBY first revealed 180 East 88th Street back in February of 2015, and the project broke ground by the middle of 2015, as we also reported. Following that, the developer encountered substantial opposition from the neighborhood NIMBYs, who persuaded the Department of Buildings to halt construction on the site, before corrections to paperwork ultimately resulted in a structure a few feet taller than what had initially been anticipated.

The building will have 1,093 square feet of commercial space and 52,221 square feet of community facility space in its lower levels, with 129,219 square feet of residential up above, divided amongst 45 units. With an average size of almost 2,900 square feet, the condominiums will be among the most palatial in the neighborhood, and consequently, the contemporarily-minded design does not disappoint.

Completion is likely in about two years.

Yeah: Smile broadly for rising progress.

  2. I love tall buildings but this one is hideously ugly!

  3. You say its the talkest on the upper east side but dont mention the hieght. I personally appreciate that information. A lover of skyscrapers.

  4. Greedy real estate interests are ruining NYC. This is one of the ugliest bldgs. I have seen in awhile. Not needed, not wanted by the majority of the neighborhood

  5. Really, the contemporarily-minded design does not disappoint? This is one of the most ridiculous buildings being constructed in Manhattan right now. It is an eye sore for the neighborhood and the residents of the upper east side. Why doesn’t the author write about the unethical wrangling and shady tactics that DDG used to skirt the building codes and the contribution made to DeBlasio’s campaign. It’s not too late to do the right thing and halt construction.

  6. where can I get information for employment for building
