Back in June of 2016, YIMBY revealed the first renderings of 200 Amsterdam Avenue, which is set to become the tallest skyscraper on the Upper West Side, at 669 feet to parapet. Permits were filed a few months later, and now, despite protests by NIMBYs, excavation work has officially begun.
SJP Properties is the site’s developer, having acquired the property for $275 million. Elkus Manfredi is the design architect, while CetraRuddy is doing the project’s interiors.
The latest photos come from Chused, and show that the site’s former synagogue is now completely dismantled. Local NIMBYs filed an audit with the Department of Buildings in an attempt to reduce the size of the new project, however their objections were found to be nonsensical, which is why the building is again moving forward.
While the developers may have to deal with an appeal, momentum appears to be on SJP Properties’ side (as well as the city’s zoning code). The tower will eventually stand 55 floors to its rooftop, with 283,000 square feet of residential space within, to be divided amongst 112 condominiums.
No formal completion date has been announced just yet, but a 2020 estimate would not be unreasonable.

200 Amsterdam is an example of how the City ignores its own rules and statutes to give developers what they want. Citizens and their concerns are give no voice. The Mayor should be ashamed of this monument to mammon.
No planned improvements to infrastructure. That neighborhood is already congested. Ugh!
I live on Amsterdam ave at 493 and I encourage the the business and the tall buildings.
I feel that this is a very handsome tower which will be a real asset to the neighborhood and to the Manhattan skyline. The design of the skyscraper’s summit recalls Mayan architecture, a truly unique architectural phrase.
New development ANY AFFORDABLE HOUSING?
200 Amsterdam Ave is the result of greedy developers and local representatives who ignored the project before it was approved and only stood up when the community spoke up!
Its a beautiul design and will enchance the UWS. Amazing all the complainers. There are so many awful buildings on UWS built in the 60’s and 70’s so to complain about a building just because its tall without appreciating its nice design is folly.
So-called NIMBYs have a pretty strong argument against this project. It won’t offer anything but multimillion-dollar units, and it will seriously block afternoon sunlight in/around neighboring Verdi Square and literally hundreds of nearby apartments. It’s the epitome of private gain at public expense, and the height should be reduced.
Looks like a building inspired by the shape of a Gillette razor blade. Did a summer intern design this ?
If so, I predict he or she will disclaim it 10 years from now.
Sometimes greedy developers design good looking buildings. This is one of them.
