The owners of Brooklyn’s Ample Hills Creamery will soon open a new location in Park Slope. The new ice cream shop will debut at 192 Prospect Park West next to the former Pavilion Theatre across from Prospect Park.
Founded in 2011, the ice cream chain has grown to include 17 locations including multiple New York City outposts, New Jersey, Miami, and Southern California. Hidrock Properties, the developer responsible for the Prospect Park location, commissioned Building Studio Architects to renovate and repurpose the site’s existing one-story building that was designed in the 1920s.
The new configuration of the building makes better use of the irregularly curved corner lot and incorporates a façade that stands out from its brown brick neighbors. The selected building envelope is comprised of floor-to-ceiling glass, iron spot brick, bluestone trim, and a dark sheet metal cornice. A series of six motorized retractable awnings are installed below the building’s cornice.
In a surprising move, Hidrock chose not to pursue the development of a taller structure and instead maintained the property’s single-story height. In 2016, Steven J. Hidary, Hidrock’s chief operating officer, told the New York Times that the team made a tough call to “save Brooklyn” in lieu of constructing a new condominium building.
An opening date has not been announced.

“Save Brooklyn” ??? Really ??
Yes, in NIMBY-land tall buildings (anything taller than most nearby buildings qualifies as tall regardless of whether it is actually tall or not) hurts NYC.
Meanwhile, under building a lot that has subway access right on its front steps is supposedly good for NYC. Go figure that twisted logic.
Saving Brooklyn one building at a time. I commend them for this decision. We need LOTS more of that.
In my opinion a four-story building would have fit in perfectly. But the renovation is a fine improvement over what was there previously.
I wouldn’t call it the former site of the Pavilion movie theater. it is the current site of
Nitehawk Prospect Park
Underutilized space in an area needing affordable housing.
On the map, you have 15th St. in the wrong place.
No, 15th street is in the correct spot.
It is a tasteful renovation and an improvement to the neighborhood.
I really like this, and i’m glad that circle is getting more use! It’s a great area, could be such a nice lively circle, and I hope there’s more good development there. That being said, I do think they could have added a few stories and made this building line up with the 2 on either side. The walls next to it look pretty bare.
A great compromise. Love it! Now all we need is for the traffic pattern to be solved without all the congestion going around the circle. Fix the back up please so we can enjoy our ice cream.
