Construction is underway for Marcus Garvey Village, an 18-story mixed-use development in Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood. Located at 212 West 124th Street, the 300,000-square-foot building will have 330 units, 3,200 square feet of commercial space, and 7,164 square feet of community facility space. The Harlem-based team behind the project includes developer Carthage Real Estate Advisors and Body Lawson Associates Architects and Planners for the design.

The West Harlem Development Corporation is involved in the partnership and contributed $2 million toward the affordable housing component. Residences will break down to 50 percent market rate and 50 percent affordable income for residents earning up to 60 percent of the area median income.

“Our mission with Marcus Garvey Village is to create a building that celebrates the spirit of a world-renowned neighborhood,” said Edward Poteat, president of Carthage Real Estate Advisors. “The Harlem in which I grew up has become a more generic, upscale neighborhood, largely at the expense of its artistic and colorful history. By bringing back performance spaces for local residents and places where our community’s uniqueness shines, we believe this project will set a new paradigm for development here.”

Renderings of the development show a red brick façade that transitions into a dark gray cementitious exterior on the upper floors. Glass balconies are visible on both the north and south elevations of the building and the ground floor has floor-to-ceiling windows to accommodate for commercial and community facility uses.

Not much information has been released about the residential amenities. However, the structure will have parking for 17 vehicles and community facility spaces to benefit the neighborhood. Community uses include a 1,000-square-foot rooftop performance area, LGBTQ center on the ground floor, and a Community Board 10 meeting room.

Marcus Garvey Village is expected to open fall 2022. An NYC Housing Connect lottery will be available for affordable housing units in early 2022.

The scale of the builing and its massign is very appropriate for New York – nicely done!

  3. It’s nice, but why does it look as if the latter part of the building is cheap and the top part is more high quality? Maybe that’s just me. But regardless, I think it looks quite nice.

  9. Great idea, not liking the design aspect..the terraces could have been better constructed. Imagine in the summer, not to mention all the mess people will put on them..it may look like a junkyard.
