Renderings have been revealed for 185 East 109th Street, a 17-story residential building in East Harlem. Designed by S. Weider Architects, the structure will yield 101 apartments and an assortment of health and wellness amenities. While not confirmed, the building will reportedly debut as a rental property.

The development site is located on the corner of East 109th Street and Third Avenue and will replace a low-rise auto repair shop. Demolition permits for the auto shop were filed in September 2021, but it is unclear when the new building is expected to debut.

Renderings illustrate a façade comprised of a varying mix of pale and dark gray cladding with oversized, industrial-style windows. As the building rises, its envelope will peel back to reveal a central vertical volume, as if sprouting from within.

The updated set of renderings does not include any illustrations of the residences or planned amenity spaces. Preliminary renderings released last year, however, offer a glimpse of how the building’s indoor pool could look when the tower is completed. Additional amenities are expected to include a business center with coworking spaces, a spa and treatment rooms, bike storage, and communal outdoor spaces.

At this time, the project team has not released a development schedule or anticipated date of delivery.

    Curiously suggestive.

    • Of what ?

    • haha at first glance, I agree!!
what curious about the skills of the renderer if not the designer: why make a decidedly modernist design, and stick coach lanterns over the outdoor pool where and
undefinable person is teetering in full dress with legs in the water?! And, why does the fenestration have to change in the emerging projectile?

  2. Kind of a mess actually.

  3. Looks interesting. So rare to see anything nice north of 96Th street.

  4. usually I hate the “stepped back warehouse to reveal the modern glassy edition” motif but for some reason I like this hot mess. I also hate when the higher parts of the building are black, just doesn’t seem to make sense in our heat island of a city, but I strangely love this building. Maybe because it’s just different and we’re all just so bored of what else is out there.

  5. That second rendering labeled indoor pool is a little concerning. It’s obviously outdoors on a high floor with no apparent railing. Plus, if the figure in the dress at the edge of the pool were to stand up she would be about nine feet tall.

  6. Why anyone would buy a condo surrounded by ghetto trash and projects says a lot about their stupidity.

  7. I still can’t get past the lanterns, or the extremely tall person in a dress, dangling feet in far edge of the pool……(clearly without showering first!)

Who is the developer/sponsor? Will this be free market development or partial/full government/taxpayer subsidized housing?
