State, city, and county officials recently gathered to celebrate the opening of a new playground at 178 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers. Located within The Ridgeway affordable housing project, the space is designed for children ages five to 12 with rubberized flooring and a variety of play equipment.
The Ridgeway also features approximately 33,000 square feet of centrally located open space with adult fitness equipment, a fully accessible meandering path from the west to east sides of the park, picnic areas, and light landscaping.
“Quite a difference from the crumbling and abandoned buildings and gas station that once stood here,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, who cut the ribbon at a dedication ceremony. “It’s public-private partnerships like these and the belief in a shining future for this city, for all its residents, that has made this day possible.”
The Ridgeway complex will bring more than 1,300 affordable housing units to the city of Yonkers. The project’s fifth phase at 178 Warburton Avenue includes redevelopment of three aging public housing buildings constructed in the 1940s and a former gas station. The new building will comprise 81 apartments and an early childhood education center.
Additional amenities at The Ridgeway include a common laundry room, a rooftop resident center with a community room, a fitness room, an outdoor terrace, and a parking garage with 61 spaces.
