Construction is nearing completion on 139 Bowery, a 14-story mixed-use residential building in the Bowery section of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Designed by Raymond Chan Architects and developed by Global Joint Venture, the structure was last reported to yield 16 rental units as well as ground-floor retail space, a 550-square-foot medical facility, and office space spanning floors two through five. Mandarin Enterprises is the general contractor for the property, which is located on a relatively narrow plot between Broome and Grand Streets.
More of the black netting and metal scaffolding was removed from the top half of the building’s northern, western, and southern elevations since our last update in mid September of last year. Sidewalk scaffolding continues to obscure the ground floor of the structure, though we could likely see it revealed later this summer. A pair of wooden water towers were installed atop the roof parapet, and interior work should be well underway by this point. 139 Bowery is among a spate of new residential low- and mid-rise construction transforming the Lower East Side around many of the busiest streets in the neighborhood.

Interior renderings have yet to be seen, though some of the residential amenities that were announced several years ago included a bike room, a fitness center, and two outdoor roof terraces. The site was once home to two low-rise walk-up structures with two lighting stores. Both buildings began demolition in 2017, and the land remained vacant for the next several years. The nearest subways from 139 Bowery are the J and Z trains at the Bowery station to the north and the B and D trains at the Grand Street station to the southeast.
YIMBY anticipates 139 Bowery to finish work sometime before the end of this year.

That sidewalk scaffold has to come down before Friday if the ground floor is going to be revealed “later this summer”.
