The plot on 6th Avenue between 30th and 31st Streets has sat vacant for quite some time. The original proposal was supposed to be built prior to the recession, and was to consist of a retail base with apartments on top, rising 40 stories.

Since the original proposal has shelved, there has been speculation regarding what would rise in its place; the public finally has an answer! The new building, set to rise in the spring, will have 56 stories. The bottom two floors will be retail and provide 60,000 square feet of space. The next 16 floors will contain a new hotel, while the rest of the building will be apartments. The entire tower will have 486,000 square feet, and was designed by Cook + Fox Architects.
No renderings of the new building have been provided yet, but the developer–Durst Fetner–is known for fantastic projects, including the Bank of America Tower twelve blocks north. Given the building will contain 56 floors, it is likely the project will make an impact on the skyline–some have guessed that the project could be as tall as 800 feet, although 600-700′ would be more reasonable.
Regardless of the eventual height, the project will most certainly help energize the neighborhood, and will be a definite improvement over the pit that has existed at the site for the past several years.
