250 West 55th’s exterior has been mostly complete for several months, with interior construction ongoing. Dependent on sunlight, the tower looks sleek and modern. Unfortunately, sleek and modern do not translate into character; 250 West 55th is still soulless, just less soulless when the sun is out.
Just around the corner, 237 West 54th Street is also nearing completion. The Kaufman-designed hotel is a surprisingly pleasant respite from its enormous glass neighbors; the building’s grey-brick facade offers a marked contrast. That’s not to say that Kaufman’s latest work is beautiful, but it does possess some semblance of individuality, and the tower looks much more ‘Gotham’ than either 1715 Broadway or 250 West 55th—it also came out much nicer compared to what the rendering had depicted.
