Though work at Related’s Hudson Yards is still in its infancy, major progress is evident at the site of the future Coach Tower, which – unlike most of the site – will be built on solid ground, rather than the rail yard platform. Excavation work looks to be wrapping up, and pile-driving for the tower’s foundation is now underway.
On the project’s website, Related states that construction of the Coach Tower will be finished by 2015. Two years is certainly an ambitious time frame to complete the skyscraper, which will rise 52 floors and 895 feet, but it’s definitely possible – Boston Properties’ new 600-foot tower at 250 West 55th Street is almost ready to open, and that development was completed in roughly eighteen months.
Manhattan’s office market has been sluggish, with leasing activity lagging – the slow-down has been felt at the Hudson Yards, Manhattan West, and the World Trade Center, as each site competes for a small list of major tenants. Construction of the Hudson Yards’ North Tower hinges on finding an anchor tenant, but once that occurs – and Time Warner, among others, has been rumored to be a contender for the lease – the site will truly become unrecognizable.
