The couple behind Grimm Ales brews test batches of beer in their Gowanus apartment and then drives down to Virginia to create larger quantities for distribution. Now the nomadic brewers are finally making the leap to a permanent brewery at 990 Metropolitan Avenue in East Williamsburg.

Their architects, Kushner Studios, have filed conversion plans for the new brewery. The two-story brick building between Catherine Street and Morgan Avenue used to be a truck repair, and alteration permits have to be filed to change the building’s use.

The plans call for a microbrewery and bottling operation with a tasting room on the ground floor, an upper mezzanine with another tasting room, and seating on the roof.

The Grimms have applied for funding for their operation from the city’s Economic Development Corporation, and they project that the construction will cost $4.5 million. They’ve also applied for a liquor license.

An LLC based nearby on Vandervoort Street purchased the property for $2,700,000 in December. The permits don’t list the Grimms as the owners, but they do mention Rimon Gabay, who’s developing a residential project in Bushwick.
