The Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group have revealed the collection of commissioned artwork that will soon be installed within the Hudson Yards mega-complex in Manhattan. The selected installations are envisioned as an enhancement of Midtown West’s existing “cultural corridor,” which includes the Whitney Museum.

The new commissions will join The Shed, a flexible arts and events venue that incorporates a 120-foot high retractable enclosure, and Thomas Heatherwick’s interactive monument currently known as Vessel.

Voices, created by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, comprises 11 stainless steel spheres that will be suspended above the lobby of 30 Hudson Yards. Each sculpture weighs between 400 and 5,000 pounds, and the whole is meant to represent global unity and cultural diversity.

The neighboring 50 Hudson Yards will house two untitled starburst sculptures designed by American artist Frank Stella.

Within 15 Hudson Yards, the developers commissioned Joel Shapiro to create a series of large-scale wooden elements that will be suspended above the residential lobby.

At 10 Hudson Yards, a commercial office tower, American Artist Jonathan Borofsky created a 30-foot-long sculpture for the West Lobby wall composed of 390 interlocking figures. The commission is one of the artist’s latest pieces of work from his Human Structures series, which was originally created for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The final commission will be installed at 35 Hudson Yards, and was created by Swedish tapestry artist Helena Hernmarck. Entitled Flowers, the piece will occupy the lobby and vestibule areas of the building.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Stop at flowers of the final section on development, materials that hoop with nature. Who lock horns please raise your hand. (Thank you)

  2. The Human Structures just doesn’t look right there. Makes you think of a kindergarten classroom.

  3. That on display is the very definition of lobby art.
    ZZZZZZ.

  4. More bland corporate art, which I suppose fits well with the giant, meaningless Vessel.

  5. Thank you Helena for adding to the thrill and beauty of New York!

  6. Everything can’t be the 30 Rock lobby..but these works give some humanity to the spaces they occupy
