SurfaceDesign has unveiled proposals to kick off the second phase of renovations at the Equinox Greenwich Avenue Club in Manhattan’s West Village. Located at 97 Greenwich Avenue, the proposed scope of work includes recoloring the existing masonry and mortar elements of the façade and repainting the aluminum cladding at the roof level.

To recolor the existing sand-colored brickwork, the design team has proposed a staining process that will permanently tint the facade to a cadet grey. The roof-level metal cladding will only be repainted along the northern elevation in what the manufacturer describes as a black satin finish. In its current state, the paneling is a light grey, aluminum color.

The first phase of the renovation was deemed appropriate by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in June 2019, which found that the proposed designs would not detract from the existing building, the immediate streetscape, or the surrounding Greenwich Village Historic District. Construction is currently ongoing and the approved scope of work includes replacement of the storefront with a new metal infill, relocation of the Greenwich Avenue entrance, new light fixtures and metal signage, removal of a glass and metal canopy, and updates to the window system.

At this time it is not clear when construction for second phase of the renovation may begin.

  1. Straight lines rise to the sky, I think it’s exciting: Thank you.

  2. I prefer the current look, which is light and warm — the new gray is too drab and depressing.

  3. Why? This is absurd.

  4. yuck ! why even do it?

  5. prefer original!

  6. looks depressing, out of place and cheap. the warm ocher color adds life to the neighborhood. this morgue gray kills it.

  7. 100% TOTAL DOG OF AN IDEA
what argument could possibly have been used to pitch this to the client?
